STATEMENT
Bren Head
My paintings are influenced by the words of Francis Bacon who said; 'I am always hoping to deform people into appearance; I can't paint them literally'
So, for me portraiture needs to be more than a likeness, more than a visual recognition or resemblance. The face should hold our attention so that within these isolated single heads an emotional atmosphere is evoked by using distortions and exaggerated features. The subject may be buried or submerged, then excavated, by layers being peeled away, eroding the surface to reveal a history.
Having made abstract paintings and working in two extremes of scale at the same time I retain an interest in exploring materials and their properties using different means of mark making, while developing new ideas on a variety of surfaces.
My work is always changing as ideas evolve.
